Review Preview: THE RISE OF THE GUARDIANS

Dreamwork’s upcoming animated holiday feature, THE RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, is a ho-ho-whole lot of fun!

I had the good fortune to be invited to take a peek at this imaginative new holiday film in 3D (and, very good 3D, I might add, Dreamworks 3D… the cream of the crop). The Rise of the Guardians is going to be a delight for the little ones and a fun journey for those of us who are no longer crumb snatchers but still believe. And in this story, ya gotta believe! It is based on a the children’s book “Man in the Moon,” from the “The Guardians of Childhood”  series by author, William Joyce (he also shares a credit here for script writing).  The classic film, “The Magnificent Seven,” was also an inspiration for the film.  But this is a hybrid. A hybrid that is part fantasy, part action and a whole lot of adventure. There is also alot of buzz and excitement for the directorial debut of Peter Ramsey, the first African American to direct an animated feature at a major studio.  Having risen through the ranks from his beginnings as a storyboard artist, he is a seasoned team player, more than capable of the task at hand and it shows.

Not only do we meet versions of some of our most beloved childhood icons like Tooth, the Tooth Fairy, voiced by Isla Fisher; E. Aster Bunnymund, the Bunny Rabbit, voiced by Hugh Jackman; Jack Frost voiced by Chris Pine; The Sandman, although he doesn’t speak he is feisty fun; and North a.k.a. Santa Claus, voiced by Alec Baldwin; we also get a chance to revisit and be horrified, one more time by, none other than, the big, bad Boogey Man named Pitch and voiced here by Jude Law.  Expect to be mesmerized by the gorgeous set designs, intense, vivid color palettes with 3D so believable, I actually saw someone in the audience reach out and try to grab one of the snowflakes that seem to have blown out in our direction.

This is a magical journey of unimagined possibilities that only a true fairytale can convey. It’s a family movie about hope vs. despair that is just in time for this year’s holiday movie season. So, dash through the snow and get ye and ya’ family tickets! The film opens nationwide November 21st.
